A Primer of Geographic Databases Based on Chorems

چکیده
The goal of this paper is not to present outcomes of research, but rather present a new research plan in the use of chorems in geographic information systems. Created by R. Brunet, chorems are a schematic representation of a territory. Presently, geographic decision-makers are not totally satisfied by conventional cartography, essentially because they want to know where and what are the problems. And so chorems appear as an interesting approach to unveil geographic problems, and so to help decision makers understand their territory, their structure and their evolution. After having given the definition and presented some applications of chorems, we show how chorems can be discovered by spatial data mining, can help decision making, and also how chorem maps can be a novel approach to visually entry a geographic database or datawarehouse. Comparing with the Ben Shneiderman’s approach, chorems can give an overview of the territory; then by zooming and filtering, and sub-chorem maps can be generated for smaller territories. Finally a list of barriers to overcome is given as main landmarks for a new research program in order to design new kind of geographic information systems or spatial decision support systems.

Potentialities of Chorems as Visual Summaries of Geographic Databases Contents
Chorems are schematized representations of territories, and so they can represent a good visual summary of spatial databases. Indeed for spatial decision-makers, it is more important to identify and map problems than facts. Until now, chorems were made manually by geographers based on the own knowledge of the territory. So, an international project was launched in order to automatically discove...
متن کاملTowards Visual Summaries of Geographic Databases Based on Chorems
For many applications, it is very important to get an overview of database contents; and in the case of geographic database, a visual summary can be very helpful for a decision-maker or for any person in charge of a territory. To get such a visual summary, a two-step process is built, first a phase of spatial data mining process extracts geographic knowledge, and a second phase visualizes it by...

Traditional cartography is a fundamental tool to visually describe facts and relationships concerning with territory. This is a well-known and well-established approach and decision makers are usually satisfied by its expressiveness when it concerns the cartography of facts. Differently, this kind of cartography may fail when dealing with scenarios referring to heterogeneous issues, such as pol...
متن کاملTowards Privacy-Preserving Semantic Mobility Analysis
By analyzing data reflecting human mobility, one can derive patterns and knowledge that are tightly linked to the underlying geography and therefore cannot be applied to another territory or even compared with patterns obtained for another territory. Another problem of mobility analysis is compromising personal privacy, since person identities can be determined based on the regularly visited ge...
متن کاملA chorem-based approach for visually analyzing spatial data
The need to support the activities of decision makers through highly interactive visual environments has motivated the growing interest in the area of GeoVisual Analytics. New interactive visualization tools are being envisaged to deal with large datasets in order to synthesize information and perform complex analytical tasks. Along this line, our research efforts have been focusing on new cart...
